Funeral services for Homer Lee Barrett, Sr., an Atoka resident, will be held Wednesday (today), April 10, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Atoka with Bro. John Mixon and Bro.Josh Cochran officiating. Burial will be in Green Meadows Cemetery in Atoka with Brown’s Funeral Service of Atoka in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barrett was born March 20, 1928 to Edgar Lee and Madel (Sands) Barrett at Antlers, OK and passed away April 7, 2024 at Atoka at the age of 96 years and 18 days. He graduated Antlers High School with the Class of ‘47 and married Ruby Ellen (Bryce) May 16, 1948 at Ethel Baptist Church in Antlers.

They enjoyed 65 years of marriage together before her passing in 2013.

Homer worked in the oil fields in Texas and Oklahoma City prior to returning to Antlers where he began his career with the United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency for many years. After attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University, he was promoted to County Executive Director and moved to the office in Atoka County in 1969. He retired from the USDA FSA in 1988 after 2 years of service. He returned to the FSA as a crop adjuster over Southeastern Oklahoma until he was 82.

Homer was a member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Atoka. In May 2021 he was recognized for his faithful service as a Deacon for 55 years in Midwest City, Antlers, and Atoka. His favorite Bible verse was “John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Homer was a member of the Atoka County Lion’s Club for many years. He enjoyed farming peanuts, gardening, fishing, hunting with his sons, reading, and especially playing dominoes. His favorite activity was spending time with with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his sons, Homer Lee Barrett, Jr. and wife Pam of Atoka, James Edgar Barrett of Coalgate, and Leon C. Barrett and wife Beth of Holdenville, OK; daughter, Ellen Janyce Scroggins of Atoka; grandsons, Anthony Barrett and wifeAmy of Fort Gibson, OK, Bradley Barrett and wife Sasha of Atoka; Brian Barrett of Holdenville, and Jason Barrett and wife Persis of Moore, OK; granddaughters, Carlee Turrentine and husband Steve of Atoka, Tami Barrett and significant other Steve Williams of Cromwell, OK and Laura Rinehart and husband Josh of Wewoka, OK; great-grandchildren, Maegan and husband Josh, Kensie, Madi, Eli, Emmalee, Hailey, Jaxon, Jacee, Luke, Trenton, Tallen, Neelie, Jadon, Jaron, Jamon, Ty, Kianna, Aniyah; sister Freida Weavel of Marshall, TX, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins that he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Ellen Barrett; parents, Edgar Lee and Madel (Sands) Barrett; brother, Jewel Barrett; sister, Jeraldine Cummings; sonin- law, Daniel Scroggins; and daughter-in-law, Mary Barrett.

Casketbearers will be Ron McGue, Don Wallace, Tom Klingensmith, Aaron Watkins, Don Burke, and David Collins. Honorary bearers will be Keith Cochran, Arthur Granger, Gary Harvanek, Coby Sherrill, Roy Burkhalter, and Brad Copeland.
