Service held for Mary Katherine Hooe

Funeral services for Mary Katherine Hooe, a Coalgate resident, formerly of Wardville, were held Sunday, March 8, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Coalgate Methodist Church with Bro. Lyle Shipley officiating.

Burial was in Wardville Cemetery with Brown’s Funeral Service of Atoka in charge of arrangements.

Mary Katherine was born on Saturday, August 20, 1938 to Robert and Sarah Ollie (Dennis) Hooe at Wardville, OK and passed away March 6, 2020, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 15 days at Ruth Wilson Hurley Manor (her home for the past 2 years.)

She attended elementary school at Wardville and high school at both Limestone Gap and Hurst, TX where she graduated in 1957. After high school she worked at the Blue Bell plant in Coalgate, OK, the ammunition plant in Savanna, OK and then finally at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, OK. In 1978, after suffering a life changing accident while on the job at Tinker Air Force Base, she retired from the workforce and eventually moved back to Wardville.

Katherine had a unique determination to not only live, but to live life to the fullest. Following her injury, she learned to walk again, she learned to swim, participated in therapeutic horseback riding, and took cake decorating classes. She made all the cakes for family weddings and birthdays for many years. During retirement Katherine devoted her time to helping others, volunteering at Mary Hurley Hospital for 20 years and the library system’s literacy program teaching individuals to read. She was a member of the Coalgate First United Methodist Church and loved reading romance novels and westerns. She was always willing to provide transportation for less fortunate neighbors for doctor’s appointments and shopping. Katherine was always eager to provide childcare for great nieces and nephews whenever needed. She watched Wheel of Fortune every evening, loved her summer potted plants, her hummingbirds and trips to Walmart. Katherine’s greatest love was for her parents, brothers, sisters and brothers and sisters-in-law, all those nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins. Many years ago Katherine had her monument erected at the Wardville Cemetery. The epitaph she chose summed up her attitude toward life. She wants to be remembered with laughter.

Survivors include siblings, Jean Ann Loftin of Bedford, TX, Paul Russell Hooe of Coalgate, OK and Margaret Jo Daniel and husband Bill of Wolfe City, TX; sister-in-law, Joyce Hooe of Wolfe City, TX; also survived by 19 nieces and nephews, their spouses, numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings and in-laws, Martha Elizabeth Carr and husbands, JB Smith, Gene Lamb and Joseph Carr, R. E. Hooe and wife Joy, Eva Inez Carr and husband Robert, Naomi Maxine Pemberton and husband Harold, Ruby Mae Williams and husband Ray, Cleveland Dennis Hooe, sister-in-law, Jeraldine Hooe, and brother-in-law Allen Lamar Loftin.
