Service held for Viola (Horton) New

Funeral services for Viola (Horton) New, a McAlester resident, were held Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Brown’s Funeral Chapel in Coalgate with Pastor Daniel Ramey officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery with Brown’s Funeral Service of Coalgate in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. New was born May 16, 1942 to Roach and Bessie Jewel (Chastain) Horton in Coal County, OK and passed away May 28, 2020 at McAlester, OK at the age of 78 years and 12 days. She attended Limestone Gap School and graduated from Olney High School. She also attended nursing school. Viola worked as a nurse and retired OKDHS and from Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a provider representative. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and reading her Bible, but her greatest treasures were her grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Mark Sandmann and wife Rebecca of Atoka, OK and Kelly Sandmann and wife Dana of McAlester, OK; grandchildren, Matthew Sandmann and wife Dawna, Weston Sandmann, all of Atoka, OK, William Sandmann of Durant, OK and Jordan Hearod and husband John of Broken Arrow, OK; great-grandchildren, Abigail Sandmann, Caitlin Sandmann both of Atoka, and Caroline Hearod of Broken Arrow, OK; sister, Emma Reed of Mustang, OK, Betty Ray of Roff, OK and Bessie Ray of Coalgate; brother, Charles Horton and wife Liz of Coalgate; sister-in-law, Elsie Horton of Coalgate; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Chance Sandmann; brother, Bill Horton; brothers-in-law, Calvin Reed, Gene Ray and Charles Ray; sister-inlaw, Lottie Horton; and nephew, Billy Joe Horton.

Casketbearers were Jeff Reed, David Reed, Jimmy Ray, Lonnie Ray, Robert Ray, Glen Ray, Chuck Horton, James Horton and David Horton. Honorary bearers were Billy Haworth, Gardner Welty, David Battles, and Fred Sandmann.
