Now that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have concluded, it would be easy for the casual viewer to think that American patriotism and love of country is at an all time low.

A lawsuit filed by a former University of Oklahoma women’s volleyball player reveals that scholarship athletes were required to watch and discuss a political documentary that compares former President Donald Trump and his supporters with violent segregationists in the 1960s.

Those of us who have taught here or even those that have lived herE for any period of time, know Ernie Fanning. He is as well known around Coalgate as Nike is to tennis shoes. Ernie is a lifelong resident of Coalgate.

STATE MEDALISTS — Josi Lackey, Patrick Kingston and Coach Matt Lane at the 3A state meet held May 7 in Catoosa. Josi placed 5th in long jump and Patrick placed 4th in 300 hurdles. “The kids worked hard all year to get the opportunity to go to the state track meet,” said Coach Lane.

The Class B tournament at Tupelo was quite a contest between the Tupelo Tigers and the Moss Pirates. In Friday’s game 1, the fifth ranked Tupelo Tigers defeated Caney 20-2. Cody Airington showed timely hitting, driving in eight on two hits. Tupelo socked four home runs.

Never underestimate the Tupelo Lady Tigers; they can become very protective of their property, and at last Thursday’s district tournament they decided the championship plaque belonged to them. Holding a 5-22 record, the Lady Tigers were sent to Asher, home of the 11th ranked Lady Indians.

There were no surprises in the high school district baseball tournament held at Tupelo on April 22. The fifth ranked Tupelo Tigers took care of business and finished the day holding the championship plaque.
