Arthur “Sonny” Willard Evans

Graveside services for Arthur “Sonny” Willard Evans, a lifelong Atoka resident, were held Monday, April 22, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Meadows Cemetery in Atoka with Larry Rose officiating, assisted by James Stephens. Brown’s Funeral Service of Atoka was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Evans was born April 26, 1932 to Willard and Alberta (Chitwood) Evans at Atoka and passed away April 19, 2019 at his home in Atoka at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 24 days. He attended East Telico School and married Retha Leona (Basham) March 13, 1957 at Sherman, TX. They have enjoyed 62 year of marriage. “Sonny” proudly served his country in the Navy and reserves from 1952 to 1960. He was a retired truck driver and a deacon at Coalgate Missionary Baptist Church. Sonny enjoyed reading, traveling with his wife and spoiling his dogs.

Survivors include his wife, Retha Leona Evans of the home in Atoka; children, Barbara Lewis and husband Kenneth of Tulsa, Walter Evans and wife Anglie of Lane, Carolyn Riley and husband Ronnie of Shady Point, OK and Phyllis Bates and husband Vern of Atoka; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; very special nephew, Evan Layton of Stringtown; brother, Winfred Dale Evans and wife Delinda of Atoka; sisters, Geraldean Helen Layton of Armstrong and Joyce Columbine of Stringtown;

along with niece, nephews, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charle William Evans, Walter Hill Evans, Alonza Joel Evans, and James Edward Evans; sisters, Susan Evelyn Blair, Catherine Louise Evans Sarah Elizabeth Brewer, Deloris Maxine Head and Lois Caroline Evans; brothers-in-law, John Blair, Jack Layton, James Brewer, Gordon Head, Lewis Layton, and Virgil “Buddy” Basham; sisters-in-law, Norma Evans, Mary Evans and Oleta Evans.

Grandsons served as casketbearers.
