Coalgate man facing multiple criminal charges

Edgar Arnold Buchanan, 36, Coalgate, is facing multiple criminal charges. The charges came about after Buchanan allegedly stole a Zebco Roam spinning rod and reel combo from a Coalgate residence on September 19.

Coalgate Police Officer Dylan Kimmel said he was contacted on September 20 by Choctaw Tribal Officer Kasey Shields who asked him to come to the victim’s residence on Finney Street for a theft report. Kimmel said when he arrived at the residence, Shields was viewing the victim’s video footage that showed a man taking the rod and reel off the woman’s front porch. Kimmel recognized the man to be Edgar Buchanan. A warrant was issued for Buchanan’s arrest.

On September 24 at approximately 4:20 a.m., Choctaw Tribal Officer Christian Minyen spotted Buchan walking across Main Street onto Ohio. Knowing that Buchanan had outstanding warrants through the sheriff’s office, Minyen contacted Coalgate Officer Dyllan Brown.

Minyen said when he pulled up to Buchanan and advised him to stop walking, Buchanan told him he had not done anything wrong. Minyen told him he had active warrants through the sheriff’s office and when Minyen exited his patrol unit, Buchanan started scanning and looking for a place to flee. The officer said he told Buchanan not to run, that he was under arrest, but Buchanan started running down the alley behind JJ Sports Bar. Minyen caught up with him following a foot pursuit of about 50 yards.

Minyen attempted to place Buchanan in hand restraints, but Buchanan refused to comply with Minyen’s orders. Following a brief struggle after Officer Dyllan Brown arrived on scene, the hand restraints were placed on Buchanan.

Buchanan continued to be combative and kicked Officer Brown in the face as Brown was attempting to place him in the patrol unit and after arrival at the Coal County jail. He finally exited the vehicle after Minyen told him he would be pepper sprayed if he did not exit but continued to be uncooperative as he was walking from the vehicle to the door of the sheriff’s office.

When Brown grabbed Buchanan under the arm, Buchanan once again threw his body weight down. Brown was able to carry him with only his feet on the ground, and Buchanan used his feet at each door to stop the officer from placing him in a cell.

After being placed in a cell, Buchanan complained of breathing problems and EMS was contacted. After checking Buchanan, EMS advised the officers that his vitals and assessment showed no abnormalities.
