Funeral services for Edith Lucille (Hicks) Deskin, a Durant resident, formerly of Coalgate, were held Friday, April 9, 2021 at 11:00 at Brown’s Funeral Chapel in Coalgate with Pastor Richard Magby officiating. Burial was in Moore Cemetery with Brown’s Funeral Service of Coalgate in charge of arrangements. Visitation was Friday morning at 10:00 a.m.

Mrs. Deskin was born August 18, 1932 to William Henry and Ruth (Woodell) Hicks at Olney, OK and passed away April 6, 2021 at Durant at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 19 days. She graduated from Olney Public Schools and received her Master’s in Education degree at Biola University in Los Angeles, CA. Mrs. Deskin was a second grade teacher at Coalgate Emerson Elementary School for 25 years. She married Vernon “Leroy” Deskin. He preceded her in death on April 23, 2010. Edith was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coalgate and also attended Harmony Baptist Church in Atoka. She enjoyed teaching Bible school, reading the Bible, teaching Sunday School and teaching Public School.

Survivors include brothers, William “Bill” and Gehrounda Hicks of Durant, OK and James and Maxine Hicks of Little Rock, AR; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry and Ruth (Woodell) Hicks; husband, Vernon “Leroy” Deskin; and sister, Myrtle May (Hicks) Spears.
