Gladys Hickerson passes away

Gladys L. (Bergman) Hickerson, 100, passed away on June 17, 2020 in the room she was born in, on the family homestead near White, SD. Her body was donated to science at the USD Medical Center. Memorial services will be held later. Gladys was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Coalgate, OK.

Gladys was born on July 20, 1919 to Theodore and Hilda (Schulz) Bergman. She attended country schools and graduated from White High School in 1937. She graduated from Sioux Valley School of Nursing in 1940 as a Registered Nurse. Commissioned in 1942, she served the Nation as a Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps until her marriage to Lt. Elzie Hickerson. ef.org They shared an interesting and rewarding Army career for 30 years before retiring to their ranch at Coalgate, OK in 1968.

Gladys and Elzie were blessed with children Patricia Lynn (Danny), Ada, OK; Donna Ramsay (John), White, SD; and Elzie Hickerson, Jr. (Lanada), Stilwell, OK. Also surviving are grandchildren Barbara (Ramsay) Helm, Chris Ramsay, Atlee Hickerson, Laura (Hickerson) Baker, Ethan Hickerson, PM and great-grandchildren Karah and Alex Helm, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Gladys was preceeded in death by her parents, beloved husband Elzie, and sister Rachel (Bergman) Lowery.
