Graveside services for Johnnie Lee Powell, a Coalgate resident, were held Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Nixon Cemetery. Funeral service followed at 2:00 p.m. at Coalgate Methodist Church in Coalgate with Pastor Lyle Shipley officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Service of Coalgate.

Mr. Powell was born March 26, 1943 to Noel Elmer and Eva Bell (Karr) Powell at his home place in Coalgate and passed away January 9, 2024 at Coalgate at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 14 days. He attended school at Centrahoma and graduated from Coalgate High School. He later attended Delmar College. John served in the U. S. Army and married Becky Eileen Scott January 13, 1968 at Corpus Christi, TX. They celebrated 49 years together before her passing February 15, 2017. John served as a Texas State Trooper and worked for the Corpus Christi Police Department. He retired as manager of Ethan Allen Distribution Center in Atoka, OK John continued to be a rancher throughout his retirement years. He was a faithful member of the Coalgate Methodist Church, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #211. He and Becky began the church food bank many years ago John’s continued support and volunteering at the food bank has been a true blessing to many. He enjoyed the outdoors and ranching. John could be found each morning drinking coffee with his friends at the gas station. He cherished his family and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include sons, Scott Powell and wife Kim of Sperry, OK and Mike Powell and wife Michelle of Coalgate; daughter, Michelle Lampkin and husband Jimmy of Coalgate; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Mike Scott; God Child, Courtney Hickman Atterberry; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dearly loved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Noel Elmer and Eva Bell (Karr) Powell; wife, Becky Eileen Powell; great-grandson, Colson Lee Powell; seven brothers and sisters and God Child, Collin Hickman.

Casketbearers were Hayden Reed, Cord Wostal, Cody Powell, Scotty McNutt, Ronnie Anderson, Aaron Blue, Josh Nelson, Milo Nelson, Greg Perry and Jeremiah Foreman. Honorary bearers were, Guy Strunk, Dan Clements, Billy Haworth, Doodle Delsigne, Earnie Dutton, Jim Clemens, Paul Armer, Jerry Battles, Don Battle, David Battles, Kathleen Fleck, Brenda Hickman, Pat Ferrero, Floyd Palmer, Perry Hefley, and Bob Burns.
