Lenora (Childress) Mayer

Funeral services for Lenora (Childress) Mayer, a Coalgate resident, were held Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Coalgate United Methodist Church with Pastor Lyle Shipley officiating. Burial was in Coalgate Cemetery with Brown’s Funeral Service of Coal-gate in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mayer was born May 7, 1938 to Lennie Ellen (White) Childress at Ardmore, OK and passed away August 28, 2019 at her home in Coalgate at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 21 days. She attended Cottonwood School, graduating from Coalgate High School in 1956. Lenora then attended and graduated from Surgical Technician School at Pontotoc County Technology Center in Ada. She married Tom Mayer on August 17, 1978 at Pryor, OK. Lenora owned and operated several local businesses in Coal County: a gas/convenience store, a dress shop, Mayer Meat Market and Processing, an antique shop in the Mayer Mansion, the Chicken Shack, and Lenora’s Flowers. She also worked for TenderCare Home Health in Coalgate and as a scrub tech for Valley View Hospital in Ada and Mary Hurley Hospital. Before retiring in 2000 she was employed at Dr. Helton’s office. Lenora was a member of the Coalgate United Methodist Church, the Coal County Election Board and volunteered with the Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed antiques and gardening. Lenora’s greatest joy was having lunch with friends, traveling and time spent with her beloved family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Mayer of the home; sons, Ricky Wood and wife Julie of Tulsa, OK, and Tommy Wood of Coalgate; grandchildren, Matthew Wood and wife Stephanie, Kaitlin (Wood) Shaw and husband Derek, all of OKC, Shelby Wood of Norman, Colton Wood of Coalgate, Candice Ott and husband Cody of Hartshorne and Adam Cole and wife Brittany of Coalgate; three great-grandchildren, Cooper Ott, Brynlee Ott and Parker Cole; sister, Mary James of Ada; special niece (sister) DeeAnn Miles of Coalgate; along with numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and dearly loved family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Patti L. Wood; brother, James (Jimmy) Madison Childress; and sister, JoAnn O’Flannagan.

Casketbearers were Matthew Wood, Colton Wood, James David Miles, Derek Shaw, Charlie Hendrix, Jr., and Michael Hendrix.

Honorary bearers were Steve Cody, Arthur DePasse, Larry Bart Pope, Jimbo Eclair, Donnie Williams, Michael Dudley, Gary Vaughn, and Chuck Loudermilk.
