Service held for Lola Smith-Conaster

Funeral services for Lola (Brown) Smith-Conatser, a longtime Coalgate resident, were held Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Brown’s Funeral Chapel in Atoka with Rev. Herbert E. Wharton and Rev. John Rueben Clemmestsen officiating. Burial was in Coalgate Cemetery with Brown’s Funeral Service of Atoka in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Conatser was born April 14, 1921 to Joseph and Emmie Nancy (Walden) Brown at Pick-ens, OK and passed away May 10. 2019 at Coalgate, OK at the age of 98 years and 26 days. She attended Coal County Schools, attended ECU College in Ada and went on to receive a Master’s Degree in teaching from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, CA of which she was very proud. Lola was a teacher for over 34 years. She taught 4 years in Oklahoma, 23 years in California and 5 years in Texas. Lola worked as a Supervisor at Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation for 15 years. She married Victor Cleo Smith August 21, 1939 in Coalgate. He preceded her in death. Later she married Melvie Lee Conatser January 10, 1987 in New Caney, TX. He also preceded her in death. Lola was a member of Atoka Assembly of God Chuch. She enjoyed playing dominoes and bingo. She served as president of the Coal County AARP for 5 years and was willing to help anyway she could. She had love and compassion for the poor and hungry. Lola’s motto was: “To do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” “It is always better to give than to receive.”

Survivors include a brother, Arnel Brown and wife Ellen of Huntsville, TX; special friend, Betty Young of Coalgate; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brothers, Harlen Brown, Bob Brown, Clarence Brown, Phoenix Brown, Forest Brown and Ruffus Brown; sister, Ruby Crumpley, Verna Henshaw, Eva Crow, Hazel Hen-shaw, and Vada Moses; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Inez Brown, Alta Brown, Marion Brown, Hazel Brown, and Teech Brown; brothers-in-law, Ed Crumpley, Frank Henshaw, Buddy Crow, Clarence Hen-shaw and Jess Moses.

Casketbearers were Matt Crow, Adam Crow, Nick Crow, Casey Mc-Collum, David Lee, and Thomas Madden. Honorary casketbearers were Bob Wingo, Larry Horn, Oron Cochran, Bill Walston, Jim Lion and Delbert White.
