Service held for Rose Marie Thornhill

Funeral services for Rose Marie (McDougal) Thornhill, a Coalgate resident, were held Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Brown’s Funeral Chapel in Coalgate with Pastor David McDougal officiating, assisted by Mr. Danny McDougal. Burial was in Mc-Carty Cemetery with Brown’s Funeral Service of Coalgate in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thornhill was born March 17, 1922 to John David and Rosa Anna (Sparks) McDougal at Richville, OK and passed away February 7, 2019 at Coalgate, OK at the age of 96 years, 10 months and 21 days.

Rose attended school at Kreb, Bache and graduated in 1940 from Haileyville High School. After graduation she attended secretarial school working in Pennsylvania and then Douglas Aircraft plant in OKC where she met and married Ernest Gilbert Thornhill in 1943 at Yuma, AZ. After his discharge from the Marines in 1945, they moved to his home town of Tifton, GA and became owner/operator of Thornhill Construction Company. Rose was of the Baptist faith; she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tifton, GA where she taught Sunday School. After Ernest’s death in 1986 she returned to Oklahoma. She enjoyed working in her yard and growing a variety of flowers. She had a God given talent of writing religious and patriotic poetry along with songs that she composed with music. When Rose was 16, Baxter Music Co. published her poem, “Sips of Life”. She had several published in local newspapers and books. Rose was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to God and her family.

She is survived by her daughters, Tanya Thornhill of Coalgate and Karen Eddings and husband Richard of Coalgate; grandsons, Roy Hopkins and wife Ashley of Coalgate, Jason Eddings and wife Amanda of Ada and Shane Eddings and wife Kristi of Stuart; granddaughters, Patricia Waite and husband Jim of Georgia and Amanda Eddings of Norman; six great-grandchildren, along with many dear and loved family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son; sisters, Gertrude Dixon, Elsie Harding, Violet Bryant, Joyce Ward, and Johnye Drummond; and brother, Alva D. “Mac” McDougal.

Casketbearers were David Harding, Rev. David McDougal, Howard O’Daniel, Jack McDougal, Bryan Roberts and Jason Eddings. Cecil Hedricks served as honorary casketbearer.
