Graveside services for Virgil Guest Smithart, a longtime Atoka, OK resident, were held Monday, January 18, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Tushka Cemetery, Tushka, OK with Rev. Bill Sluder officiating. Brown’s Funeral Service of Atoka was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smithart was born October 22, 1928 to R. D. and Emma (Combest) Smithart at Caddo, OK and passed away January 14, 2021 at Hugo, OK at the age of 92 years, 2 months and 23 days. He attended Tushka Public School and married Shirley U. Lowe May 7, 1955. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before her passing in 2008.

Virgil proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a MP and also served in Japan. He was a maintenance worker for International Paper and Georgia Pacific Paper Co. where he retired in 1980. Virgil was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed mechanic work, deer hunting, fishing, working in his shop, re building cars and rebuilding his 1972 Mustang Mach I.

Survivors include his daughter, Shirlene Yates and husband Dicky of Atoka; son, Kevin Smithart of Tushka; grandchildren, Shirley Cole of Atoka, Brandon Smithart of Coalgate, Justin Reynolds of Tushka; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Madisyn, and Tom Alderson and Lexi Smithart, all of Atoka, OK; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, R. D. and Emma Smithart; wife, Shirley Smithart; sons, Valton and Terry Smithart; brothers, Billy, Leroy and Arvil Smithart; and sisters, Louise Smith and Audrea Collinsworth.

Casketbearers were Slick Cole, Bobby Anderson, Wayne Smithart, Lynn Kelley, Alfred Elliott and Hoppy McDougal.
