Graveside services Held for Velda Jo (Baker) Mayo

Graveside services for Velda Jo (Baker) Mayo, a Coalgate resident, were held Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Moore Cemetery in Clarita, OKwithbrotherClaude Lovett officiating. Brown’s Funeral Service of Coalgate was in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Mayo was born April 6, 1941 to George Sidney and Hannah Pauline (Shelton) Baker at Bennington, OK and passed away September 10, 2025 at Coalgate at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 4 days. She attended schools in Boswell and worked as a cook for Wapanucka and Harmony Schools and was also a waitress and cook at the Brandon Iron Cafe. Velda’s greatest accomplishment was raising her 5 boys, Larry, Terry, Perry, Jerry and Barry. She was a member of the Wapanucka Baptist Church and enjoyed puzzles, arts and crafts, gardening and yard selling.

Survivors include her sons, Larry Mayo of McAlester, Terry Mayo of Sulphur, Perry Mayo and Jerry Mayo, both of Tupelo, and Barry Mayo and wife Melissa of Kiowa; thirteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; brother, Tony Baker and wife Mary of Webb City, MO; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Sidney and Hannah Pauline (Shelton) Baker; father of her children, L. C. “Bud” Mayo; grandson, Gary Shawn Mayo and great-grandchildren, Nadia Mayo and Landon Mayo.
