Thelma Irene Toney

Thelma Irene Toney passed away on June 11, 2021 in Denison, Texas. She was born on February 28, 1924 in Francis, Oklahoma to John Franklin and Essie Akins Scroggins. She attended grade school at Cedar Grove School and then attended and graduated from Francis High School. She and James “Norvin” Toney were married on June 30, 1940 in Arpelar, Oklahoma. They were married for nearly 78 years until his death on May 25, 2018. During World War II, she lived in Washington D. C. and Sabine, Texas where Norvin was stationed with the Coast Guard. After the war, they and their 2 children, Pat and Jerry, moved to the small community of Pleasant Hill south of Stonewall, Oklahoma where they remained for 73 years.

Thelma loved sewing and quilting and belonged to several women’s clubs in the community. She was active in the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church and later attended the Methodist and Baptist churches in Stonewall. Thelma is survived by her daughter, Pat Gregg, brothers Charles Scroggins and Dale Scroggins (Sharon), daughter-in-law Barbara Toney, grandchildren Brian Perry, Russell George, Scott Toney (Denise) and Sara Shinneman (John), and seven great grandchildren,

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Essie Scroggins, husband Norvin Toney, son Jerry Toney, sister Helen Royer and brothers Ted Scroggins, Spud Scroggins and Wib Scroggins.

Graveside services were held at Francis-Cedar Grove Cemetary in Francis on Friday, June 18 with Larry Hawkins officiating.
