Funeral services for Vera Jane (Burnett) Cannon Amend, a longtime Atoka, OK resident who grew up at Falfa, Lone Pine, Pine Springs and Centerpoint communities, were held Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Brown’s Funeral Chapel in Atoka with Bro. Kelly Hardman officiating. Burial was in Darwin Cemetery in Darwin, OK with Brown’ Funeral Service of Atoka in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Amend was born April 26, 1933 to Odes A. and Effie Julie (McLeod) Burnett at Buffalo Valley, OK and passed away October 9, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Atoka surrounded by her loved ones at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 13 days. She was a housewife and homemaker who also worked at many different jobs and was known as a pioneer woman. Vera worked at many jobs from nursing, cotton fields, hauling hay, sewing factory, cooking at Pine Springs and Farris School, raising and selling watermelons, and operating the sale barn cafes at Antlers and McAlester. Vera married Voyd Ogden Cannon on February 4, 1948 at Paris, TX. He preceded her in death in 1969 after 21 years of marriage. She later married Erdice Amend and he preceded her in death in 2011. Vera was a faithful, devout and lifelong member of Farris Church of Christ where she enjoyed working at whatever. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting for arrowheads, quilting, and her most enjoyment was feeding her family and friends and never let anyone leave hungry, enjoyed canning vegetables and fruits, writing, and reading. Above all else, Vera loved her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Rodger P. Cannon and wife Mariann of Centerpoint, OK, Evelyn Roberson of Atoka, Thomas C. Cannon, Sr. and wife, June of Centrahoma, OK, Voyd O. Cannon Sr. and wife Dae of Pine Springs, OK, Janetta Blakely of Lane, OK and Julie Starnes and husband Pat of Centerpoint, OK; grandchildren, Bonna, Lacey, Robert, Justin, Rodger, Angela Marie, Tracey, Carla, Sabrina, Carl, Isaac, Bodie, Casey, Kelley, April, Orrin, Tara, Dusty and Rusty; 42 great-grandchildren; 5 great-greatgrandchildren and one to be here soon; siblings, Nancy Holaday of Darwin, OK, Margaret Mosley of Oklahoma City, Evelyn Yates of Paris, TX, Donna Breeze of Burleson, TX, Martha Moore of Ft. Worth, TX, Kay Parsons and husband Charlie of Antlers, OK; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Odes and Effie Julie (McLeod) Burnett; husbands, Voyd Cannon and Erdice Amend; Robert Eugene Cannon; brothers, Johnny Burnett, James Burnett, Billy Burnett and three infants died at birth; sisters, Clarissa Garmon and Dorothy Griffin; and son-inlaw, Leon Roberson.

Casketbearers were Bodie Cannon, Carl Cannon, Dusty McCarty, Rusty McCarty, Justin Cannon, Roger Cannon, Isaac Cannon, Orrin Cannon, Tracey Roberson, Bonna Jane Cannon, and Tara Jackson. Honorary bearers were great-grandchildren.
