Lois Shearer Cook

Lois Shearer Cook, age 95, died in Dallas, TX on the 15th of April 2026.

She was born in Non, Oklahoma, the first of eight children to H.C. Shearer and Bernice Willis Shearer. She was raised in Coalgate, Oklahoma, and later moved to Oklahoma City, where she worked for the telephone company.

In 1953, she married the love of her life Vestal Stevens Cook. Together, they shared a long and fulfilling life, living throughout the Midwest, including in Houston, Texas; Fort Collins, Colorado; Lincoln, Nebraska; Salina, Kansas; Ada, Oklahoma; and finally, Coalgate, Oklahoma. Their life together was filled with family, friends, and many adventures. They were deeply involved in their church and devoted to helping others.

After returning to Coalgate, Lois became involved in the real estate business, earning her real estate license. A few years later, she obtained her broker’s license and opened Cook Realty, her own business. This was one of her proudest achievements. It also gave her the opportunity to enlist Vestal as her appraiser - and, at times, reluctant handyman.

Lois was ahead of her time as a do-it-yourselfer, always immersed in a remodeling project— whether wallpapering, painting, or implementing her latest design ideas which was often met with groans from her kids and Vestal retreating to the Elks or the local domino parlor. Later in life, Lois moved to Dallas, where she lived a rich and joyful life with the Coomber family, who lovingly treated her as the resident queen until her passing.

Survivors include sons Steve (Roxann) Cook, Robert (Monica) Cook, daughter Laura (Stephen) Coomber, grandsons, Cameron (Jessica) Cook, Vestal (Nicole) Cook III, Robert Coomber, granddaughter Caroline Coomber, great grandchildren, Madison, McKenzie, Annie, Asher, and Colton, sister Freda Ketchum and other siblings.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Vestal, parents, HC and Bernice Shearer, brother George Shearer and sister Jean Owen.

Services will be held graveside at Highland Cemetery 803 N Iliff St., Medicine Lodge, Kansas, on Saturday, May 22, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
