1781 – British General Cornwallis surrenders at the siege of Yorktown. With the surrender, fighting in the colonies during the American Revolution came to an end. General George Washington’s Continental Army had trapped Cornwallis’ British troops in Yorktown in September. The British held out for nearly a month before surrendering nearly 8,000 men, 144 canons and over 40 ships. The following Spring peace negotiations began in Paris, and in 1783 the Treaty of Paris officially recognized the independence of the United States of America.

Weekend traffic stops lead to drug trafficking arrests

Two weekend traffic stops in Coalgate — one on Saturday, September 16, and one on Sunday, September 24, by the Coalgate Police Department resulted in more than traffic tickets. The stops led to at least three people being charged with drug trafficking and other crimes and one Texas juvenile facing unknown charges.
