Linda Strunk honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Johnny Sandmann, President of the Coal County Chamber of Commerce, left, and Coalgate Schools Superintendent Jack Ward present Linda Strunk a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2022 Coal County Chamber of Commerce banquet. Mrs. Strunk retired from Coalgate Public Schools this spring after teaching math at Coalgate High School for 52 years. She was honored for her many years of service to the profession of teaching and the manner in which she represents the citizens of Coal County. She was named Teacher of the Year for her dedication and commitment to teaching. Linda says teaching has never been a job — it has been a joy.

Alter “Althear” Finley, a lifelong Atoka, OK resident, passed away on Sunday May 22, 2022, in Coalgate, OK. at the age of 60 years, 11 months and 1 day. Althear was born on Thursday, June 21, 1952, to Jessie Willard and Elree (Burton) Harrison, in Atoka, OK. Althear graduated from Atoka High School in 1970 and attended Murray State College and became a CNA. She married Simon Finley, Jr. on Saturday, September 17, 1977, in Atoka, OK. She was a member of the 4 Ward Church of Christ. She lived to shop, go to church, and spend time with her family, and her favorite color was red.

Kayla Blue Named Alpha Plus Model Teacher

E. E. Emerson Elementary third grade teacher, Kayla Blue, was recently named Alpha Plus Model Teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. Alpha Plus honored 48 teachers from among 945 teachers using interim assessments statewide. Alpha Plus is aligned with the Oklahoma Academic Standards. Alpha Plus has an OAS Pacing Calendar with curriculum mapped to 100 Days to ensure key objectives are taught before state tests. Kayla’s dedication and commitment to the Alpha Plus program will impact the lives of the students in her classroom. She is committed to following the program and knows that doing so will ensure their success. She is passionate about the success of her students and other teachers around her. Debra Johnson, Principal, said that Kayla is an amazing teacher, and she is so proud of her. Great work Kayla Blue!
